Changing a Color Photo to Black and White

The first thing to do when you want to change your color photo to black and white is to create a “working” copy of the photo.  After all, you wouldn’t want to start working on your photo and then lose the original in the process.  Open the file and use “save as” to create another file with a new name.  This is the photo that you can play with.  Most of the time, photos begin as color photos and they are generally in RGB format, which means Red Green Blue.  To change these photos to black and white, you will need to have photo imaging software that will do the job.

It is important to note that the most common and simplest approach to changing a color photo to black and white is to convert it to grayscale, which is a more accurate term for a black and white photo.  When you choose this option your software will change the photo to grayscale, which means that it is no longer in RGB.  This is fine unless you want to print your photo because the printer tends to like RGB.  Fortunately, you can then take your grayscale file and convert it back to RGB.  It will still be in shades of gray, but will be in the RGB format.
